Use the active voice to increase engagement. The active voice is typically clearer and easier to understand than the passive voice.[52] A sentence in active voice typically follows a formula of actor, verb, target—for example, The cat sat on the mat. The passive voice sounds more academic, following a formula of target, verb, actor. For example, The mat was sat on by the cat. Active voice often shortens sentences and makes them feel more alive.
